FAQ's
General
Is the timber I'm buying suitable for my project?
Every timber species has unique qualities — from appearance to durability. Our experienced team will guide you in selecting the ideal timber to suit your needs and budget. Why not give us a call or email our friendly staff to find out?
Will my timber come cross cut to length?
While this is a service we offer, it needs to be requested beforehand. Typically, your timber will come in the correct cross-sectional dimensions, but for lengths under 2.5 meters, we may provide it in multiple sections.
Timber / Quality
Is the Douglas Fir I'm buying locally sourced?
By selecting our homegrown Douglas Fir, you’re choosing timber sourced from nearby estates — on average, within just 50 miles of our sawmill. It’s a great way to support sustainable, local forestry. Our homegrown Larch and Western Red Cedar are the same too!
Is there a minimum quantity I need to order?
No, there’s no minimum order size — you can order as much or as little as you need. That said, larger orders help us offer more competitive pricing. Just keep in mind that smaller orders may have higher delivery costs, as transport companies charge a minimum fee per delivery.
Does my timber need to be treated?
Treatment isn’t always required, as it varies depending on the timber species and the purpose of your project. The key factor to consider is whether the timber will be in ground contact or exposed to pooling water, which increases the risk of decay. For example, cladding is designed to allow water to run off and generally doesn’t need treatment. Our team is ready to guide you on the best approach for your timber project.
Ordering
How do I order timber for my project?
To provide an accurate quote, we’ll need a cutting list from you that includes the timber species, lengths, widths, thicknesses, and quantities required. If your order involves any additional processes — such as kiln drying, moulding to profile (including PAR), or cross-cutting to length — please include those details as well. The more information you can give us, the faster we can prepare your quote. The easiest way to get started is by emailing us — it’s the simplest way to begin your timber journey.
How long will my order take?
There are several factors that affect our lead times. At East Brothers, lead times are dynamic and depend on the number of processes required for your order. For sawn timber, the average lead time is around 2–3 weeks from the order date. For imported hardwoods such as Sapele, orders can often be fulfilled within 2–3 days. As always, exact lead times will be confirmed at the time of enquiry and order.
How much will delivery cost?
Deliveries of timber products are arranged through trusted third-party vendors. Pricing and availability are assessed on a case-by-case basis, as each order is unique in size, weight, and destination.
When arranging delivery, it’s important to provide as much information as possible so we can ensure a smooth and efficient service. Please let us know:
-
Whether the delivery will require hand offload or mechanical offload (e.g., forklift or HIAB).
-
If there are any site restrictions, such as limited access, tight turning areas, or restricted delivery hours.
-
Any height, width, or weight limitations that may affect vehicle access.
Firewood
What if you don't deliver to my area?
Our firewood deliveries primarily cover the Salisbury, Winchester and Southampton areas. If we’re unable to deliver to your location, we can still provide a collected bag option for you to pick up directly from our site.
What will my firewood look like?
Sustainably produced and perfectly dried, our firewood is made from timber processed through our sawmill for custom orders. This normally gives it four neat square edges, setting it apart from traditional split firewood. Every log is kiln-dried on-site using heat generated from our woodchip – which is a byproduct, ensuring an eco-friendly, efficient drying process.
If I want to collect a bag, what is the process?
Our collected firewood bags can be forklifted directly into trailers, high-sided vans, and pickup trucks for easy loading. If you’re collecting in a car, we can position the bag behind your vehicle, and you’ll need to hand offload the logs into the boot. This can be done in two trips if necessary, though most modern hatchbacks with the rear seats folded down can accommodate the full load.
What is better, hardwood or softwood?
As kiln-dried firewood and log burners have become more popular, softwood has emerged as an excellent, budget-friendly alternative to hardwood. It is significantly cheaper than hardwood and offers several advantages — it lights easily and produces rapid heat. Ultimately, the best choice depends on how you use your fire. If you’re looking to take the chill off in the evening after work, softwood is quick, convenient, and hassle-free. However, if you’re burning logs throughout the day, hardwood is the more efficient option, providing longer-lasting heat.

How should I pay for my order?
Once your order is ready, we’ll send an invoice for payment. We recommend paying by BACS transfer, ensuring your invoice number is used as a reference for smooth processing.
