Feather Edge Cladding
Feather Edge Cladding – Cut to Order
Feather edge boards are a versatile option for fencing and external cladding, offering a traditional, durable finish. East Brothers supplies feather edge boards available in widths from 150mm to 250mm and cut from the following thicknesses:
-
25mm (15–7mm taper)
-
32mm (20–9mm taper)
-
38mm (25–10mm taper)
-
42mm (27–12mm taper)
Boards are typically supplied in random lengths and all profiles are cut to order, with alternative sizes available on request.
Species Guide:
-
Larch – Naturally weather-resistant due to its high resin content, making it ideal for exposed applications. However, the same resin makes it less receptive to finishes such as paints or stains.
-
Douglas Fir – A well-balanced choice for cladding: durable, dimensionally stable off the ground, and accepts paint and finishes effectively.
-
Oak – A premium hardwood with excellent longevity and structural properties. Best installed outside summer months due to potential movement and surface cracking as it dries in hot weather.
-
Western Red Cedar – A high-end softwood with excellent weathering properties and longevity. UK-grown cedar may feature more knots than imported stock, but remains highly suitable for cladding applications.

Thermally Modified cladding timber
Thermally Modified Ayous – Durable, Lightweight, and Dimensionally Stable
Ayous, also known as Obeche, is a tropical hardwood that undergoes thermal modification to enhance its performance — making it an excellent choice for external timber cladding. Through a high-temperature, oxygen-free treatment process, the timber’s internal structure is altered, significantly improving its durability, dimensional stability, and resistance to moisture and decay.
Originally a lightweight and easy-to-machine species, thermally modified Ayous becomes a high-performance cladding solution with a smooth, consistent grain and an appealing pale tone that can be left to weather naturally or finished for a more refined look.
Why Choose Thermally Modified Ayous for Cladding?
-
Excellent Dimensional Stability – The thermal modification process reduces the timber’s ability to absorb water, significantly lowering the risk of movement, warping, or swelling — ideal for exterior cladding applications where performance is critical.
-
Enhanced Durability – Classified as Class 1 or 2 durability (depending on treatment intensity), Ayous becomes suitable for long-term outdoor use without the need for chemical preservatives.
-
Lightweight & Workable – Easier to handle and install than many hardwood alternatives, especially on larger façades or taller buildings.
-
Refined Appearance – A clean, uniform grain with few knots, giving a smooth, contemporary finish. Can be installed in a variety of profiles including shiplap, shadow gap, or tongue & groove.
-
Low Maintenance – Can be left to silver naturally over time or treated with oils and stains to retain its original tone.
Profile Compatibility:
Thermally modified Ayous can be machined to suit a wide range of cladding profiles, and its improved stability makes it especially suitable for narrow shadow gaps, modern rainscreen systems, or other high-precision applications.
At East Brothers, we offer thermally modified Ayous machined to order in your desired profile, thickness, and face width — combining modern performance with timeless timber craftsmanship.
